I want to work as a highly skilled migrant

The Highly Skilled Migrant Scheme is a fast and relatively simple procedure for knowledge workers from outside the EU who want to live and work in the Netherlands. Although no prior work permit is required, there is a minimum salary requirement. In addition, the company which is to employ the skilled migrant must be an IND-approved sponsor. This application can be arranged within four weeks.

For 2018, the minimum gross monthly salary of a highly skilled migrant is as follows.

  • €3.229 (excluding 8% holiday allowance) for highly skilled migrants under 30. This amounts to a gross annual salary of €41.847,84 (including 8% holiday allowance)
  • €4.404 (excluding 8% holiday allowance) for highly skilled migrants aged 30 or older. This amounts to a gross annual salary of at least €57.075,84 (including 8% holiday allowance)
  • €2.314 (excluding 8% holiday allowance) for highly skilled migrants after an orientation year for graduates or highly educated persons. This amounts to a gross annual salary of €29.989,44 (including 8% holiday allowance)

The employment contract must be for at least four months. Different rules apply to scientists (salaried scientific researchers, PhD holders or unpaid scientific researchers with a grant) from outside the EU.
